Luke Warm Milk

I’m sure everyone has been constantly refreshing troubleinthebalkans.blogspot.com hoping to see Mark’s first entry since arriving in Zambia. I am sure everyone is eager to read my perspective on Zambian culture and receive some deep insight about this distant world. Unfortunately, you’ll get none of that. Instead, you will get some inane commentary about totally insignificant events that I have experienced in the last 5 days.

I had my first ‘I’m a naïve American’ moment on Thursday. I am staying at hotel until I arrange housing and had dinner at the hotel restaurant. The waitor comes around and asks me what I would like to drink. I remind myself that it is essential that I maintain a well-balanced diet while in Zambia; I order a milk. Surprised, the waiter asks if I want it warm or at room temperature. I think to myself, “I don’t want warm milk, so I obviously want room temperature”. He looks puzzled and walks away. I start to reconsider my decision. He brings the milk. I take a small sip. I realize that milk is never served at room temperature. I would never drink room temperature milk in America. Why would I do it in Zambia? I politely ask him to heat it up. Not much of an improvement. Milk in Zambia is predominantly whole milk. I’m kinda used to skim milk…cold skim milk.

Hi, I’m Mark. I’m a naïve American. Please bookmark this site and check my blog often.
